Description
Diwali is one of the most important festivals as part of the Hindu religion. As part of the festival, it has become custom to light lamps (over the ages, this has been oil lamps and now lamps / electrical lighting fixtures) around and outside the home or office establishment. As part of the mythology surrounding the festival, it celebrates the return of Lord Rama from his 14 year exile, after defeating the demon king Ravan. Diwali also marks the end of the harvest season and also invoking the blessings of the Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) and inviting her into the home, symbolizing the prayers for inviting more wealth into the house.
This photo shows part of the process of prayers that are done during the festival of Diwali. The plate has oil lamps made of earth, baked to harden. As part of the process of prayers, wicks are placed in these lamps, and then they are filled with mustard oil, and finally lit to be placed in the different corners of the house, to welcome Godess Lakshmi into the house. In this photo, the lamps are being lighted up using candles, so that they can start being placed around the house.
