Description
Dover Castle has been called the Key to England because of its strategic location, at Dover on the English Channel, being seen as the point closest to the continent. The current castle dates back to the 12th century, although there are remains from much earlier, from the time of the Romans or even earlier. The current Castle also contains within it the remain of an ancient Roman lighthouse. The Castle also played a role during the second world war when there threats of an imminent invasion of Britain by the Nazis, and served as a command center and a hospital complex. Dover Castle has a church within it called St. Mary in Castro, a very well restored structure. The church is in use, serving the army and the local population.
