Description
This is a wonderful building, that was constructed in 1880 as a Benedictine abbey, called the Fort Augustus Abbey. However, in the 1990's, the school that was run as part of the abbey had to be closed and that meant that there was now a shortage of funds. There were a number of measures that were tried, but eventually the abbey was closed and the monks left. Finally, the abbey was converted into self-catering apartments for tourists, now being called the The Highland Club. These self-catering apartments are also called the Aonach Mor apartments, and present a great experience for tourists with large private gardens and at the shore of the lake. The architecture of the building looks incredible, with the shape of the windows and a modern compromise, the lightning rod on top.
